Project Term at Kensington Woods: Students Build It, Film It, Cook It, and Run It
The last two weeks of school at Kensington Woods (KWoods) don’t slow down for countdowns and movie days, they flip. As a public charter school serving grades 6-12 in Livingston County, our classrooms turn into bakeries, cafés, and sewing labs. How? Through our “Project Term,” which energizes the end of year calendar for students.
They pick the topic. They own the outcome.
Every KWoods middle and high school student joins this focused, two-week course built around one question: what can you make in ten days that actually holds up? This goes beyond worksheets and poster boards. Project Term has structure, deadlines, and a final presentation in front of peers and parents.
What Students Actually Do During Project Term at Kensington Woods
Courses change year to year, but our focus remains the same: build something that works, explore something that matters, and don’t sit still. In Dungeons & Dragons Encounters, students explored the creative world of game design by developing their own characters and crafting unique game modules. In Adventure Coast, they hiked trails and practiced outdoor survival skills. Introduction to Cooking got some students off of YouTube and into the kitchen, turning raw ingredients into full meals without a microwave in sight!
Others studied the Art of Being a Barista, where students explored the art and business of coffee by visiting local cafés, learning coffee-making techniques, and developing a creative mini business plan for their own theoretical coffee shop. Whether it’s martial arts or creative writing, experimental photography or immersive Spanish, every course ends with a showcase of student work that’s built to stand up to questions, as well as hearty applause.
Why Project Term Matters to Parents
Project Term gives our students skills that stick: planning, problem-solving, and presenting. They pitch ideas, answer tough questions, and finish what they start. You don’t need to ask if they’re engaged because you’ll see it. Any local parents searching for “charter schools near me” or “my kid is bored in school” land (and stay) here for a reason: KWoods is different and our classwork means something. Don’t take our word for it. Tour Kensington Woods and ask students what they built. Then ask them what’s next!
